The kitty cat was busy watching television (a cat show, of course) while a little girl pored over a book. Well, there are all kinds of uses for books and not just for reading. She brought the book over to a full-length mirror and put it over her head. A book is not just a book, it can be ... a hat! Of course kitty cat was watching and put his nose up in the air. Such nonsense! Then again, that kitty cat could use a book to hide under. A book is not just a book, it can be a tent! A book “can keep a table steady. / It can prop up a floppy teddy bear / You can use it as a funnel ...” Yep, a book is not just a book. There are all kinds of uses for a book, but kitty cat didn’t like them all, like ever. When the little girl tied kitty cat to the tracks and used that book for a train tunnel, he just didn’t. No, that was not at all fun nor was it fun when the little girl made a tower of books. A book is not just a book, but it can be “a brick for building towers!” Put a kitty cat on top and it’s lots of fun! Not. “A book is never just a book. / It can swat away a fly ... / hide your face if you are shy. / [and even] Shoo away a scary bear ...” Can you think of any way to use a book that’s lots of fun? This is a fabulously fun and entertaining book about all kinds of creative uses for books that will make young readers giggle. The rhyming scheme makes this book fun to read and, as usual, Tony Ross’s illustrations bring this book to life. I had to chuckle at poor kitty cat’s dilemma, but I think my favorite use for a book was keeping bugs out of a drink. The more serious uses for a book also make this book sparkle. This would be a fun book to read and discuss during circle or story time, one that will engage young minds thinking up more unusual ways to use a book.Age Range: 4 - 8 yearsGrade Level: 1 - 2TONY ROSS:I Want a Party!I Want to Go Home!I Want a Sister!I Want to Be!I Want Two Birthdays!I Want My Mom!I Want to Win!I Don’t Want to Go to the Hospital!I Want My Light On!This book courtesy of the publisher (to the library).
