Description
Unfortunately, this is a book about Norman. Norman does not live an eventful life, nor does he plan to. Norman is somewhat overweight, somewhere in his forties, and lives by himself with a cat, who is also named Norman (Norman is not very creative). In all regards, he’s the physical embodiment of vanilla ice cream (in a bowl), and plain eggs. Perhaps with some luck and initial conflict, the story within this book could be the change in his life that he so desperately needs. This isn’t going to be that book. The Book of Norman is an anthology novel, telling the daily life of Norman, with each day being an individual story. Norman is a character that comes from reddit.com, from the subreddit /r/lifeofnorman. There, anyone can write a story about Norman, following a loose canon, but with full control over how they see Norman. It’s also where all the stories within this book come from- all written by the people from the subreddit, edited together in a way that shows perspective on Norman as a person- both the good times, and the bad.Over 300 people pitched into this project, whether that being writing stories, or doing an illustration for the book, or editing. We all came to the same agreement- to donate 100% of the profits to cat shelters. It’s an odd choice for a charity to donate all the money to, but it seems fitting, being that Norman’s main source of happiness and companionship is his cat. It’s small in scope, but helping people through helping cats sounds like a fine plan to me. You can read more about the details of the shelters and how the donations will be split, or even write your own Norman story, over at reddit.com/r/lifeofnorman.

I'm only 60 pages into The Book of Norman, but the reality is I won't give it less than 5 stars when I'm finished so I might as well leave 5 stars now. After all, this is /r/lifeofnorman in print. Although I don't like every story that is actually the beauty of Norman and it's why I think so many people identify with the project. It's imperfect and that makes it feel real and relatable. On top of that compiling a book like this is a feat that few people would even attempt so kudos to Cameron Crane for following through on a phenomenal project.
